Bhupesh Baghel Meets Punjab Congress Leaders Amid Ongoing Party Differences

Bhupesh Baghel discusses Punjab Congress issues with state leaders.

Congress Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel held meetings with several state leaders on Tuesday amid growing internal differences within the party over the state unit leadership. The discussions come as a faction supporting former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi continues to seek attention from the party leadership ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said Channi and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who heads the party’s core committee, are expected to meet Baghel within the next few days. Warring said Baghel has already met various committee chairpersons and party functionaries as part of his efforts to understand the situation within the state unit.

Baghel had earlier told reporters after arriving in Chandigarh that he would take two to three days to assess the concerns raised by party leaders before making any statement. He said he planned to meet working presidents, office-bearers, district unit presidents, and senior leaders before sharing his views on the leadership-related issues.

On Tuesday, when asked about the absence of leaders from the Channi camp during his meetings, Baghel said he was still in the process of holding discussions and requested more time. He said he would provide details after completing his interactions with party leaders. Meanwhile, Congress working president Raj Kumar Verka met both Baghel and Channi as the party leadership attempted to bridge differences between various groups.

The internal debate intensified after several current and former Congress MLAs backed Channi for reconsideration as Punjab Congress chief. However, the party recently announced the continuation of Warring as the state unit president along with the formation of committees for the 2027 Assembly elections. The decision reportedly led to dissatisfaction among some leaders within the party.

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa acknowledged that there were some issues within the Punjab Congress but expressed confidence that they would be resolved. He urged leaders to maintain discipline and ensure that internal disagreements do not become a public issue. Bajwa said Congress has greater internal democracy and that differences can be addressed through discussions.

With Punjab elections approaching, Congress leaders have stressed the need to remain united and focus on public concerns, including law and order issues and drug-related challenges in the state. Party leaders said resolving internal matters quickly will be important as Congress attempts to present itself as a strong alternative in the upcoming electoral contest.
