Ignored Complaints Cost Two Lives in Surat Electrocution Tragedy

Two men died after suffering an electric shock in Surat on Monday evening, with one of the victims losing his life while attempting to save his neighbour. The incident occurred during continuous rainfall at Sujatkhan Street near the Badi Masjid in Rander Gaon, leaving two families without their primary breadwinners.

The first victim, 28-year-old Azam Alam Abdul Kamal, was a daily-wage labourer. According to the available information, Azam was climbing the iron staircase of his house when he suddenly came into contact with an electric current and began crying out for help.

Hearing his cries, 43-year-old neighbour Mohammad Salman Mohammad Irshad Sheikh rushed to rescue him. However, as soon as Salman touched Azam, the electric current reportedly passed through his body as well, leaving both men severely affected.

Local residents quickly switched off the power supply and rushed the two men to a hospital. Doctors, however, declared both of them dead. The deaths of the two men within minutes sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood and plunged their families and local residents into mourning.

Salman’s nephew, Sheikh Salauddin, alleged that the landlord had previously been informed about electrical current being felt on the staircase, walls and other parts of the house. He claimed that repeated complaints were ignored and said the tragedy could have been prevented if the alleged electrical fault had been repaired earlier.

Salman’s wife, Chandni, said her husband lost his life while trying to save another person. The incident has raised concerns over electrical safety during the rainy season, when wet surfaces and exposed or faulty wiring can increase the risk of electrocution. The circumstances surrounding the deaths and the allegations made by the family are expected to be examined by the relevant authorities.
