Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan To Attend Sikkim Statehood Day Events Tomorrow

Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan to participate in Sikkim Statehood Day events scheduled tomorrow.

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan will visit Sikkim on May 16 to attend the Statehood Day celebrations, where he is expected to participate as the chief guest, according to official preparations underway in the northeastern state. The visit comes as Sikkim marks the anniversary of its formal integration into the Indian Union in 1975.

The Statehood Day programme is scheduled to be held across key venues in Gangtok, with the state government making elaborate arrangements for security, protocol, and public participation. Senior officials have reviewed the preparations, including logistics, stage arrangements, and coordination among departments to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.

The celebrations hold historical significance as Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, following a referendum in which an overwhelming majority voted in favour of merging with India. The move ended the monarchy and formally brought Sikkim into the constitutional framework of the country.

Officials have stated that this year’s Statehood Day programme will highlight Sikkim’s development journey, cultural heritage, and contributions in sectors such as tourism, organic farming, and environmental conservation. Public participation events and cultural performances are expected to be part of the celebrations.

The Vice President’s presence is seen as a key highlight of the event, underscoring the importance of Sikkim’s statehood within the broader narrative of India’s northeast development and integration efforts. Authorities have also tightened security arrangements in Gangtok ahead of the high-profile visit.

With preparations in their final stages, Sikkim is set to observe Statehood Day with ceremonial events, official speeches, and cultural showcases reflecting its 51-year journey as a full-fledged state of India.
