Trains Resume in Jammu After Record Rainfall Halt
Trains resume after heavy rain disrupts services.
After a day-long suspension caused by relentless rainfall, train services in Jammu roared back to life on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, bringing relief to stranded passengers. Northern Railway officials confirmed that six trains, previously cancelled or short-terminated due to the deluge, are now scheduled to depart from Jammu, marking a return to normalcy after unprecedented weather chaos. The restoration follows a nightmarish 38-hour period where Jammu city recorded over 380 mm of rain, triggering floods, landslides, and widespread damage to infrastructure.
The reinstated services include key routes such as the Jammu Tawi-Kamakhya Express, Jammu-Sambalpur, Jammu-Ambedkar Nagar, Jammu-Varanasi, Jammu-Bandra, and Jammu-Chhapra, with three trains resuming after cancellations and three after being halted mid-journey. The disruption, which began Tuesday night, saw 22 trains cancelled and 27 short-terminated across Jammu, Katra, and Udhampur stations, with nine cancellations hitting Katra, the gateway to the Vaishno Devi temple. Despite the regional turmoil, the Katra-Srinagar rail link remained operational, offering a lifeline amid the crisis.
The heavy rains since Monday have wreaked havoc, submerging homes and farmlands, destroying bridges, and forcing evacuations as the region faced its worst downpour in decades. Northern Railway’s swift response to restore services reflects efforts to mitigate the impact on commuters and pilgrims. As the weather stabilizes, authorities are assessing the damage, with hopes that the restored train network will ease the burden on affected communities, though the full recovery of the region’s transportation system remains a work in progress.
