Heavy Rains Paralyze Jammu, Abdullah Responds
Heavy rains trigger severe flooding across Jammu.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared a state of high alert in Jammu on Tuesday as relentless heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day pushed rivers and streams to dangerous levels, submerging low-lying areas and paralyzing the region. Labeling the situation as “quite serious,” Abdullah announced he would take the next available flight from Srinagar to Jammu to personally oversee flood mitigation efforts, underscoring the urgency of the crisis.
In a high-level meeting held in Srinagar, the chief minister reviewed flood control measures and directed officials to remain vigilant and implement all necessary precautions. “The situation in many parts of Jammu is critical,” Abdullah posted on his personal X account, emphasizing the need for swift action. He also ordered additional funds to be allocated to deputy commissioners to support emergency restoration work and address immediate needs.
The incessant rains have caused widespread disruption across Jammu division. Major rivers and streams are either above or nearing the danger mark, flooding roads, homes, and low-lying areas. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a critical lifeline, has been shut down due to the deluge, halting vehicular movement and stranding commuters. Visuals shared on X show waterlogged streets and residents wading through knee-deep water, highlighting the severity of the flooding.

Abdullah’s administration is mobilizing resources to mitigate the crisis, with teams working around the clock to monitor water levels and reinforce flood defenses. The chief minister urged residents to stay cautious and follow updates from local authorities. The government is also coordinating with disaster response teams to ensure rapid assistance in affected areas.
The heavy rainfall, part of a broader weather pattern impacting northern India, has raised concerns about long-term flood preparedness. Experts warn that climate change may be intensifying monsoon patterns, leading to more frequent and severe flooding in vulnerable regions like Jammu. As the crisis unfolds, Abdullah’s hands-on approach aims to restore normalcy and prevent further damage in the flood-ravaged region.
