J&K on High Alert as Omar Abdullah Battles Devastating Rains
Jammu and Kashmir on high alert as heavy rains cause floods and damage.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has placed all relevant departments on high alert in response to heavy rainfall that has battered the Union Territory since the night of August 23, 2025. The relentless downpour has triggered flood-like conditions in low-lying areas, caused waterlogging in residential neighborhoods, and damaged a critical bridge on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway, severely disrupting connectivity.
In a statement posted on X on August 24, 2025, the Chief Minister’s Office emphasized Abdullah’s directive for heightened vigilance, noting that rivers and nallahs are flowing above danger levels. “Control rooms are active, and the CM Office is in touch with departments. Priority is being given to drainage in affected areas and restoration of essential services like water supply and power,” the statement read.
Abdullah urged residents to exercise caution, citing the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of moderate to intense rainfall, with risks of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in high-altitude areas until August 27, 2025.
The administration is actively monitoring the situation, with control rooms coordinating efforts to mitigate flooding and restore normalcy. Abdullah’s proactive measures underscore the urgency of addressing the crisis, as the region braces for further adverse weather conditions, prioritizing public safety and infrastructure recovery.
