Jammu’s Tawi Bridge Collapse Traps Vehicles Amid Deadly Floods
Jammu’s Tawi Bridge collapsed during heavy floods, trapping vehicles and sparking rescue efforts.
A dramatic collapse of a portion of the Fourth Tawi Bridge in Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar, triggered by relentless rainfall and the swollen Tawi River, left an SUV trapped and several vehicles stranded, as captured in a viral video circulating online. The footage, shared by news agencies including PTI and ANI, shows the road caving in under the force of the raging river, with panicked onlookers shouting warnings to those near the collapsing site to seek safety. Visuals also depict cars sinking into the broken bridge as the Tawi River surged, fueled by incessant downpours.
The continuous rainfall, described as the heaviest in decades, has caused widespread flooding across Jammu and Kashmir, with rivers like the Tawi, Chenab, and Ravi flowing at or above danger levels. Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma reported that 36 hours of non-stop rain led to school closures and heightened alerts, with field staff actively warning residents. The road connecting the bridge to Bikram Chowk was also washed away, exacerbating disruptions.
Hundreds of residents were evacuated from flood-affected low-lying areas in Jammu and Samba districts, with the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and local administration conducting extensive rescue operations. The region faced further tragedy as a landslide near the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Adhkuwari claimed nine lives and injured 21 others, with rescue efforts ongoing. Authorities have suspended traffic on the bridge and urged residents to avoid rivers and landslide-prone areas as the crisis unfolds.
