TMC's Abhishek Banerjee Faces Fresh CID Interrogation in Assembly Forgery Case
Abhishek Banerjee Appears Before CID Again In Assembly Forgery Case
Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Sunday for a second round of questioning in connection with the ongoing Assembly signature forgery case. The investigation pertains to alleged irregularities in a key legislative document, with authorities probing claims of forged signatures linked to official Assembly proceedings.
According to officials, Banerjee arrived at the CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhawan in Kolkata at 11:43 am, 17 minutes ahead of his scheduled 12 pm appearance. His presence came in compliance with a Calcutta High Court directive, which had instructed him to cooperate fully with the investigation. Upon arrival, he reportedly presented his identity card, signed the attendance register, and proceeded for questioning by CID officials.
This marks the second time Banerjee has been questioned in the case, following an earlier five-and-a-half-hour interrogation conducted on Thursday night. Investigators are believed to be examining multiple aspects of the alleged forgery, including the authenticity of signatures and the circumstances under which the disputed documents were prepared and circulated within the legislative framework.
The Calcutta High Court has granted interim relief to Banerjee in the matter, directing that no coercive action be taken against him for a period of two weeks. This legal protection allows the investigation to continue while ensuring that no immediate arrest or punitive action is initiated during the specified timeframe, as the court monitors the progress of the probe.
Meanwhile, the case has drawn significant political attention due to Banerjee’s senior position within the TMC and his role as a prominent Lok Sabha MP. The allegations have added to the broader political and legal challenges currently surrounding the party, even as investigators continue to gather evidence and statements related to the disputed Assembly documents.
Authorities have also noted that a fresh criminal complaint was filed at the Siliguri Cyber Crime police station by a local trader on Friday, further widening the scope of legal scrutiny in the matter. The CID is expected to continue its investigation in the coming days as part of its ongoing probe into the alleged forgery case.
