Siliguri Trader Files Complaint Against Abhishek Banerjee Over Amit Shah Comments

Complaint filed over Abhishek Banerjee's remarks targeting Amit Shah.

A trader from Siliguri has filed a police complaint against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, alleging that remarks made by the party leader during the recently concluded state assembly election campaign were provocative and targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The complaint was lodged on Friday at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station by trader Sanjay Kr Singhal. According to the complainant, the remarks in question were made by Banerjee while addressing election rallies on May 4.

Singhal contended that the statements were inappropriate and raised concerns about their impact on public sentiment during the election period. Speaking about the complaint, Singhal alleged that a public representative should exercise restraint while addressing political gatherings. He questioned how a Member of Parliament could make such remarks against the Union home minister and claimed that the statements created an atmosphere of fear among people attending or following the campaign.

The trader further argued that Banerjee’s comments were not in accordance with the law and sought action from the authorities. The complaint adds to a series of politically charged legal disputes that have emerged in West Bengal in the aftermath of the assembly election campaign. There was no immediate response from Abhishek Banerjee or the Trinamool Congress regarding the allegations. Authorities have also not publicly disclosed whether any formal inquiry has been initiated based on the complaint.

The development comes days after another complaint was filed at the same police station against former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. In that case, an advocate alleged that her public remarks concerning constitutional institutions and comments linking the Union government to a political killing in Bangladesh were prejudicial to national sovereignty and public order.

Abhishek Banerjee, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and Member of Parliament, is also facing scrutiny in multiple investigations being conducted by state and central agencies. Among them is a probe related to alleged forged signatures connected to the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. The latest complaint is expected to further intensify the political contestation between the ruling party and its opponents in the state.
