Police raid Abhishek Banerjee's Kolkata home at 2:30 AM with Mamata confronting officers on scene
A late-night police operation at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata triggered high drama in the early hours of Saturday, with security personnel, police teams, and political leaders converging at the scene. The incident reportedly took place around 2:30 am, when a team of Bengal Police arrived at his home in connection with an ongoing investigation.
According to sources, the police action was aimed at apprehending Banerjee’s personal secretary, Sumit Roy, who has been booked in an alleged extortion case. Officials reportedly sought permission to conduct a search at the premises, which led to a confrontation with the security staff stationed at the residence before police entered and carried out their operation.
As news of the development spread, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the location shortly after, reportedly questioning the police presence at her nephew’s residence. The situation remained tense for some time, with heavy police deployment and central forces also being seen outside the premises during the early morning hours.

After a period of heightened tension, the police team eventually left the residence. Officials later confirmed that further legal proceedings are continuing as part of the broader investigation. Abhishek Banerjee, however, declined to comment in detail on the raid and referred reporters to the investigating agencies when asked about the operation.
The case is linked to multiple ongoing probes involving allegations against individuals associated with the Trinamool Congress. Authorities have also issued a notice to Banerjee to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on June 16 in connection with a separate case related to alleged hate speech during an election campaign. He has previously been questioned by investigators in another matter involving alleged irregularities.
Meanwhile, broader investigations into alleged corruption cases involving political figures in West Bengal are also underway, with enforcement agencies conducting searches in related cases. Officials said inquiries are ongoing and further action will depend on the findings of the investigation, as multiple cases continue to be examined by different agencies.
