Sunny Joseph is New Kerala Congress Chief! 2026 Poll Preps Begin

Congress Revamps Kerala Unit, Names Sunny Joseph as Chief Ahead of 2026 Polls

The Congress party announced a major rejig of its Kerala unit, appointing legislator Sunny Joseph as the new president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), replacing K Sudhakaran, as it gears up for the 2026 assembly elections.

The overhaul, aimed at strengthening the party’s position in the state, includes the appointment of three new working presidents—MLAs P C Vishnunadh and A P Anil Kumar, and MP Shafi Parambil—alongside Adoor Prakash, MP, as the convener of the United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance.

The changes, effective immediately, were approved by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, with the current Kerala assembly’s tenure set to end on May 23, 2026.

AICC general secretary K C Venugopal emphasized the strategic appointments in a statement, expressing gratitude to outgoing KPCC chief K Sudhakaran and UDF convener M M Hassan for their contributions. The party also acknowledged the efforts of outgoing working presidents Kodikkunnil Suresh, T N Prathapan, and T Siddique.

Vishnunadh has been relieved of his role as AICC Secretary to focus on his new responsibilities. In a separate move, K Sudhakaran and Akhilesh Prasad Singh, recently replaced as Bihar Congress chief, were named permanent invitees to the Congress Working Committee.

The reshuffle reflects Congress’s intent to consolidate its organizational strength in Kerala, leveraging a mix of experienced legislators and parliamentarians to mount a formidable challenge in the upcoming polls and reinforce its leadership in the UDF coalition.
