Stalin Advocates Legal Action to Restore States’ Powers
Tamil Nadu CM pushes for states’ rights
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, delivering his Independence Day address in Chennai, called for legal action to reclaim states’ powers, alleging that the Centre is usurping their authority, particularly in education. Speaking at the 79th Independence Day celebrations, Stalin criticized the central government’s withholding of rightful funds, stating it undermines cooperative federalism. “A state government constantly struggling for its dues does not bode well for federalism. Legal action is the only solution to retrieve states’ roles and powers,” he asserted, urging immediate steps to pursue this course.
Stalin emphasized that India’s freedom was won through the collective efforts of people from all states, religions, languages, and cultures, reflecting the vision of the nation’s founding fathers for an inclusive country. “Fulfilling their wishes is the true tribute to them,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to equitable governance. The CM’s remarks follow ongoing tensions with Governor RN Ravi, who referred a state bill to establish Kalaignar University to the President, seen by the DMK as an attempt to delay assent.
During the event, Stalin honored Indian Union Muslim League leader KM Khader Mohideen with the Thagaisal Thamizhar (Distinguished Tamilian) Award for his contributions to public service. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan received the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award for his scientific achievements.
Stalin’s call for legal recourse aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader push for federal autonomy, including protests against reduced tax devolution, with the state receiving only 29 paise for every rupee contributed to the Centre, compared to Uttar Pradesh’s ₹2.73, as per 2024-25 fiscal data.
