PM Modi Condemns Emergency, Urges Constitutional Dedication
PM Modi recalls Emergency’s assault on democracy
During his speech Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi delivered a powerful reminder of the Emergency imposed 50 years ago, describing it as a period when “democracy was murdered, throttled, and backstabbed.”
Speaking to the nation, PM Modi emphasized that the dark chapter of 1975, when the Constitution was violated and India was turned into a “prison,” must never be forgotten. “No generation should forget this sin of murdering the Constitution or the sinners who committed it,” he asserted, urging citizens to strengthen their commitment to India’s constitutional values.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, PM Modi highlighted the suspension of civil liberties, mass arrests, and censorship that scarred the nation for 21 months.
His remarks, part of a 103-minute speech, align with his broader call for a united, self-reliant India, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding democratic principles to achieve ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
