Skyroot’s Vikram-1 Becomes India’s First Private Orbital Rocket To Launch

Vikram-1 launch marks India’s private space milestone.

India’s private space sector achieved a major milestone on Saturday as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first private orbital-class rocket, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The historic mission marked a significant step towards expanding private participation in India’s commercial space ecosystem. The launch, named “Mission Aagaman” (arrival), was carried out from the first launch pad of the space centre. The seven-storey-tall, four-stage Vikram-1 rocket lifted off at 12.05 pm, about 35 minutes later than its originally scheduled launch time of 11.30 am due to a planned hold following apparent navigation-related issues.

The mission demonstrated the capabilities of India’s growing private space industry by carrying multiple technology demonstration payloads into space. After its initial flight lasting nearly 16 minutes, Vikram-1 was expected to deploy domestic and international payloads into a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of around 450 km with an inclination of 60 degrees. The rocket is named after Dr Vikram Sarabhai, widely regarded as the father of India’s space programme. Designed and developed by Skyroot Aerospace, Vikram-1 features an advanced all-carbon composite structure and uses propulsion systems developed by the company itself, including 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid-fuel rocket boosters.

The launch vehicle carried payloads from several organisations, including Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot’s own SCOPE payload. It also carried an artwork titled “Cosmic Bloom”, adding a creative element to the technology-focused mission. The successful launch represents a significant achievement for Skyroot Aerospace, which aims to provide dedicated and flexible satellite launch services for companies worldwide. The company has described its vision as offering a “cab service to space”, allowing customers to use its rockets to place satellites into specific orbital locations or support future space missions.

Vikram-1’s development reflects the rapid growth of India’s private space sector following policy reforms that opened greater opportunities for private companies to participate in satellite launches, rocket development, and space-based services. The mission also highlights the increasing role of startups in complementing the efforts of India’s national space agency. The successful flight places Skyroot among a select group of private companies globally that have developed orbital-class launch capabilities.

It is expected to strengthen India’s position in the commercial space market and create new opportunities for satellite operators seeking cost-effective launch solutions. With Vikram-1, Skyroot Aerospace has moved closer to its goal of becoming a major player in the global small satellite launch industry. The mission is being viewed as a landmark moment for India’s space ambitions, demonstrating how private innovation can contribute to the country’s expanding presence beyond Earth.
