India's First Private Orbital Rocket Vikram-1 Set For Historic Liftoff Today

Skyroot Vikram-1 launch details and livestream information.

Hyderabad-based space startup Skyroot Aerospace is set to achieve a major milestone for India’s private space sector with the launch of Vikram-1, the company’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. The mission, named “Aagaman”, is expected to test the capabilities of Skyroot’s next-generation rocket and could mark a significant step towards India’s growing presence in the global commercial space launch industry. The launch is scheduled to take place from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Mission Aagaman is scheduled for July 18 at 11:30 am and will serve as the first test flight of Vikram-1. Skyroot Aerospace has described the mission as an important validation exercise aimed at evaluating the rocket’s systems, performance and flight capabilities. The company said the test will generate critical data that will help improve future missions and support the development of a reliable private orbital launch ecosystem in India.

Space enthusiasts and viewers interested in watching the historic launch can follow the live broadcast on Skyroot Aerospace’s official YouTube channel. The livestream will allow audiences to witness a significant moment in India’s space journey as a private company attempts to launch an orbital-class rocket from the country’s established spaceport at Sriharikota.

Vikram-1 has been named in honour of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, the renowned physicist and visionary widely recognised as the father of India’s space programme. The rocket represents the next stage of Skyroot Aerospace’s efforts to develop commercially viable launch vehicles capable of serving the growing demand for satellite deployment. The company aims to provide flexible and cost-effective launch solutions for small satellites and contribute to the expansion of India’s private space industry.

The launch follows Skyroot Aerospace’s earlier success with Vikram-S, a suborbital rocket launched in November 2022 under the mission named Prarambh. That achievement made Skyroot the first private Indian company to launch a rocket into space and demonstrated the increasing role of startups in India’s space ambitions. The success of Vikram-S helped establish confidence in the ability of private firms to develop and operate space technologies alongside government institutions.

The name “Aagaman”, which means “arrival” in Sanskrit, reflects Skyroot’s vision of India’s arrival as a serious participant in the global private orbital launch market. The company said the mission will focus on proving essential technologies required for orbital missions, including the performance of the launch vehicle during flight conditions. India’s space sector has witnessed significant transformation in recent years following reforms that opened opportunities for private companies to participate in satellite manufacturing, launch services and space technology development.

Organisations such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) have supported greater involvement from private players. With Vikram-1, Skyroot Aerospace is attempting to move beyond experimental launches and enter the competitive commercial orbital launch sector. The mission’s outcome will provide valuable insights into the company’s technology readiness and future plans. If successful, the launch could further strengthen India’s reputation as an emerging hub for private space innovation and commercial satellite services.
