PM Modi Backs Skyroot's Vikram-1 as Historic Space Milestone
PM Modi wishes Skyroot success ahead of Vikram-1 launch.
India is set to witness a landmark moment in its space programme as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace prepares to launch Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital launch vehicle, from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The four-stage rocket is scheduled for liftoff at 11:30 am on Saturday under the mission named "Agaman." Ahead of the historic launch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to the Skyroot Aerospace team, describing the mission as a significant milestone in India's expanding space ecosystem and a testament to the country's growing private-sector capabilities.
In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said the Vikram-1 mission represents a new frontier in India's space journey and reflects the talent, determination and entrepreneurial spirit of the nation's youth. He added that the reforms introduced in India's space sector have opened new opportunities for innovation, investment and private enterprise. Wishing the team success, he expressed hope that Vikram-1 would create history and inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers and innovators. He also encouraged people across the country, particularly young Indians, to follow the mission and support the team behind the launch.
Vikram-1 is a seven-storey-tall, multi-stage orbital launch vehicle constructed using an all-carbon composite structure. The rocket is powered by propulsion systems developed entirely in-house by Skyroot Aerospace, including advanced 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid-fuel boosters. It has been designed to provide rapid and cost-effective launch services for small satellites, with the capability to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low Earth orbit. The maiden mission aims to place its payload into a 450-kilometre orbit with an inclination of 60 degrees.

The launch follows the success of Vikram-S, Skyroot Aerospace's suborbital rocket, which became the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach space in November 2022. Building on that achievement, the Vikram-1 mission is intended to validate the performance of the company's orbital launch vehicle, its propulsion technologies and other critical onboard systems under real flight conditions. A successful mission would represent a major advancement for India's private space industry and strengthen the country's position in the global commercial launch market.
Skyroot Aerospace announced earlier this week that the "Agaman" mission would serve as the company's first orbital demonstration flight. Beyond proving the vehicle's technical capabilities, the launch is expected to showcase the growing role of Indian private companies in satellite launch services following the government's decision to open the space sector to private participation. The mission is also viewed as an important step towards providing responsive, on-demand launch solutions for domestic and international customers.
The successful launch of Vikram-1 would mark another significant chapter in India's rapidly evolving space programme, complementing the achievements of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) while highlighting the contribution of private innovation.
