Sandeep Pathak Meets Amit Shah, BJP Likely To Give Him Crucial Punjab Poll Responsibilities

Pathak meets Shah over Punjab polls.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah has fuelled speculation that the party could assign him a key role in shaping its Punjab strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Pathak, who recently joined the BJP after leaving the Aam Aadmi Party, has extensive experience in Punjab politics and was instrumental in the AAP’s successful 2022 election campaign. Pathak was among 16 national secretaries appointed during the BJP’s recent organisational restructuring under party president Nitin Nabin. He is the only one among the seven former AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who recently switched to the BJP to receive the national secretary post.

His elevation, coming only around three months after his move to the BJP, has increased speculation about the responsibilities the party could give him in Punjab. A former assistant professor at IIT-Delhi, Pathak became known for his organisational and electoral strategy work behind the scenes. He played an important role in AAP’s 2022 Punjab Assembly campaign, including its candidate selection process. Several of the candidates whose selection he was involved in went on to become MLAs after the party secured a decisive victory in the state. After meeting Shah on Wednesday, Pathak posted about the interaction on X, thanking the Union home minister for his time, guidance and encouragement. He said he looked forward to contributing to strengthening the BJP and advancing the vision of a “Viksit Bharat”.

The meeting has prompted political speculation because of Pathak’s knowledge of Punjab and his previous role in building AAP’s electoral machinery in the state. The BJP is likely to use Pathak’s understanding of Punjab’s political landscape as it prepares for the 2027 Assembly election. Party sources have indicated that fresh strategising could be assigned to him, particularly as internal surveys are reportedly pointing towards anti-incumbency against a number of sitting AAP MLAs. His familiarity with the candidates and political networks established during the 2022 campaign could potentially provide the BJP with insights as it seeks to expand its presence in the state. Pathak’s political journey has included senior organisational responsibilities within the AAP.

He was considered close to AAP national convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and served as a permanent invitee to the party’s Political Affairs Committee. His role was primarily focused on strategy and election management rather than public-facing politics. He was appointed AAP national general secretary in December 2022, months after the party’s Punjab victory. Earlier that year, in June, AAP sent him to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab. His elevation within the party reflected the confidence the AAP leadership placed in his organisational and strategic capabilities. His subsequent move to the BJP marked a significant shift in Punjab’s political landscape. The BJP has been working to strengthen its organisational base in the state and establish itself as a stronger electoral force.

Pathak’s appointment as a national secretary gives the party an experienced strategist who has previously worked extensively on the ground in Punjab. The 2027 Assembly election is expected to be closely watched as the BJP seeks to challenge the AAP government, while the Congress and other political forces also attempt to regain ground. For the BJP, identifying areas of voter dissatisfaction and developing an effective constituency-level strategy will be crucial. Pathak’s previous involvement in candidate selection and campaign planning could make his experience particularly relevant.

The meeting with Shah does not by itself confirm that Pathak has been assigned a specific responsibility for the Punjab election. However, his recent organisational elevation and his meeting with the Union home minister have strengthened speculation that the BJP is considering a larger role for him in the state. With Punjab heading towards another major electoral contest in 2027, Pathak’s transition from AAP strategist to BJP national secretary represents an important political development. His knowledge of the ruling party’s earlier campaign strategy, combined with his new position within the BJP, could make him a significant part of the saffron party’s preparations for the next Assembly election.
