Amit Shah’s October Manipur Visit Gains Significance Amid Fresh Push For NRC Before Census

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Manipur in the first week of October, where he will lay the foundation stone for the Senapati Medical College and review developmental projects, according to the Manipur Chief Minister's Office (CMO). The visit comes amid continuing political and social discussions over the National Register of Citizens (NRC), with organisations in the state demanding that the exercise be undertaken before the upcoming Census and delimitation processes.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday and discussed a range of issues concerning the state. According to the CMO, Shah gave a detailed hearing to the matters raised by Singh and assured him that the Centre would work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Manipur. The meeting comes against the backdrop of the state's continuing efforts to address developmental and security concerns following prolonged ethnic tensions.

Shah's planned visit is also significant because demands for an NRC exercise have been gaining momentum among sections of Manipur's Meitei and Naga communities. Organisations representing the two groups have been calling for the implementation of the citizenship register before the Census and delimitation exercises. A group of Manipur legislators had also travelled to Delhi to raise the demand with leaders of the Central government.

The Union home minister has agreed to lay the foundation stone for the institution, according to the CMO. The Manipur cabinet recently took a decision to establish the medical college, making its foundation stone ceremony a significant development for healthcare infrastructure in the district.

The proposed visit combines developmental priorities with discussions over issues that remain politically sensitive in Manipur.
