Rajasthan Initiates Action After Two Postpartum Deaths At Kota Medical College Hospital
Rajasthan launched disciplinary action after two women died following C-section complications at Kota hospital.
The Rajasthan government has initiated disciplinary action against medical staff at New Medical College Hospital in Kota following the deaths of two women after caesarean deliveries and complications suffered by several other patients. Officials confirmed on Friday that multiple healthcare workers have been suspended or removed from service as authorities investigate alleged lapses in post-operative care and adherence to medical protocols.
According to government officials, around 12 to 13 pregnant women underwent C-section surgeries at the hospital on Monday evening. Within eight to 12 hours after the procedures, six women reportedly developed serious complications, including a sudden drop in blood pressure and platelet levels, along with urinary blockage. The affected patients were shifted to the hospital’s nephrology department for emergency treatment as their conditions worsened.
One of the women, identified as Payal, 26, died during treatment on Tuesday. Another patient, 19-year-old Jyoti Nayak from Kota, died on Thursday while undergoing treatment. The deaths triggered concern within the state administration and prompted an immediate review of medical procedures followed at the hospital during and after the surgeries.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma directed officials to conduct a fair and time-bound investigation into the incident. Medical Education Commissioner Babulal Goyal visited the hospital to review the situation with hospital authorities and medical staff. Principal Secretary for Medical Education Gayatri Rathore said preliminary findings pointed to serious lapses in following prescribed medical protocols and patient monitoring procedures.
Based on the initial inquiry, Associate Professor Dr Navneet Kumar from the General Surgery Department has been suspended, while contractual assistant professor Dr Shraddha Upadhyay has been dismissed from service. Two nursing officers, Gurjot Kaur and Nimesh Verma, were also suspended over alleged negligence in patient monitoring and compliance with treatment procedures. Additionally, show-cause notices have been issued to Dr B L Patidar and Dr Neha Sehra, both unit heads in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, seeking explanations regarding supervision and post-operative care responsibilities.
Officials said all admitted patients are now under close observation and instructions have been issued to ensure proper treatment and monitoring across the hospital. Authorities added that a detailed inquiry remains underway and further action will be taken against any personnel found responsible once the final investigation report is submitted. The incident has renewed scrutiny over patient safety standards and accountability within public healthcare institutions in Rajasthan.
