Rain And Thunderstorms Bring Much-Needed Relief To Heatwave-Hit Delhi

Rain and thunderstorms bring relief to Delhi after scorching heat.

Light rain and thunderstorms brought temporary relief to residents across Delhi and the National Capital Region on Saturday morning after several days of intense heatwave conditions. The showers lowered temperatures slightly across parts of the city, offering respite to people who had been enduring extreme summer conditions with temperatures consistently crossing 43 degrees Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the rainfall activity was triggered by thunderstorms developing over northwest India. However, the weather agency warned that the relief is likely to be short-lived, with temperatures expected to rise again from Sunday and heatwave conditions projected to continue over the coming days.

Delhi recorded severe heat on Friday, with Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, registering a maximum temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius. The reading was 3.1 degrees above the seasonal average, although marginally lower than the previous day’s temperature. The minimum temperature settled at 29.3 degrees Celsius, remaining significantly above normal nighttime levels.

For Saturday, the IMD forecast a maximum temperature of around 44 degrees Celsius along with continued heatwave alerts despite the morning rain. Officials indicated that while isolated thunderstorm activity may continue intermittently, the broader weather pattern still favours hot and dry conditions across much of north India.

The IMD has stated that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi until at least May 28. Meteorologists attributed the prolonged spell of extreme heat to dry winds blowing from Rajasthan and the Thar Desert, which significantly raised daytime temperatures across the region over the past several days.

Weather expert Mahesh Palawat explained that a recent shift in wind direction helped bring a slight dip in temperatures and enabled thunderstorm activity to develop over Delhi-NCR. Despite the temporary improvement in weather conditions, authorities continue to advise residents to remain cautious, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.
