IMD warns heatwave in Delhi and northwest India regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of severe heatwave conditions across parts of Northwest and Central India, including Delhi, while simultaneously forecasting widespread rainfall activity in several other regions of the country over the coming days.

According to the IMD, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the plains of Northwest and Central India for several days this week. Regions including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana may experience intense heat stress, with isolated pockets expected to bear the brunt of extreme temperatures.

The weather department has specifically warned that Uttar Pradesh may witness severe heatwave conditions between May 19 and May 23, while Delhi and surrounding areas are expected to remain under heatwave conditions from May 18 to May 23. The IMD also projected a rise in maximum temperatures by 3–5°C across parts of Northwest India till May 21, followed by relatively stable conditions thereafter. Hot and humid weather is likely to continue, further increasing discomfort levels.

States such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds, with isolated spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

Eastern states including Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha are also expected to experience widespread rainfall with thundersqualls reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph. Meanwhile, parts of Northwest India such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive scattered showers between May 19 and May 23, offering partial relief from ongoing heatwave conditions.

The IMD further indicated that southern states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Lakshadweep and adjoining regions are likely to witness heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next few days. The department has advised residents in heat-affected regions to take precautions against extreme temperatures, while also urging caution in rain-hit areas due to the risk of strong winds and lightning.
