Delhi-NCR Braces for 40°C Heat as IMD Warns of Persistent Heatwave

The IMD warns of a persistent heatwave across Delhi-NCR; temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C with health risks.

Residents across Delhi-NCR continued to endure intense summer heat on Tuesday as temperatures were expected to remain above 40 degrees Celsius, prompting fresh warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Large parts of North India, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, have also been experiencing scorching conditions accompanied by dust storms and hot winds over the past several days.

According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to persist across parts of northwest and central India in the coming days. Delhi is expected to remain under severe daytime heat stress, with high temperatures and warm nights offering little relief. Weather officials said prolonged exposure to such conditions can increase health risks, especially for children, senior citizens and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

However, the IMD has also forecast thunderstorms and gusty winds in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttar Pradesh, which may provide temporary relief from the extreme heat. Sudden weather activity could lead to a drop in temperatures, but officials cautioned that strong winds and lightning may also create local disruptions, including dust storms, reduced visibility and short-term traffic delays.

The weather agency advised people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated and avoid unnecessary travel. Residents were also asked not to take shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to stay away from water bodies, electrical conductors and concrete surfaces that retain heat. Authorities urged people to unplug electronic devices during lightning activity and remain alert to changing weather conditions. With summer intensifying, experts said precautionary measures and timely forecasts will be key to reducing heat-related health impacts across the region.
