Railways Clears Danapur-Fatuha Multitracking Project To Boost East Central Railway Capacity

Indian Railways has approved the multitracking of the 29-kilometre Danapur–Fatuha section of the East Central Railway at an estimated cost of Rs 976 crore, in a move aimed at improving rail capacity and reducing congestion along one of Bihar’s busiest railway corridors. The project is expected to strengthen passenger and freight movement in the Patna region while improving train operations on the heavily utilised route. According to an official statement issued by Indian Railways, the multitracking project will be carried out through three major components.

The plan includes the construction of third and fourth railway lines between Danapur and Patna, a third line between Rajendra Nagar and Patna Sahib, and third and fourth lines between Patna Sahib and Fatuha. The additional tracks are expected to significantly increase the operational capacity of the corridor. The railway ministry said the project will help decongest the existing network and allow more trains to operate smoothly. In the first year after completion and commissioning, the upgraded section is expected to enable the introduction of 22 additional passenger trains and 18 additional freight trains every day.

The expansion is likely to benefit daily commuters as well as industries dependent on efficient freight transportation. The Danapur–Fatuha corridor is considered a crucial part of the rail network in Bihar due to its strategic location and high volume of train movement. The route serves as an important link for passenger services connecting Patna and surrounding areas, while also supporting freight traffic passing through the region. With existing infrastructure facing increasing pressure, railway authorities have identified capacity enhancement as a key requirement. The introduction of additional tracks is expected to improve train punctuality, reduce waiting times, and minimise operational delays caused by congestion.

Railway officials believe that separating train movements through additional lines will allow passenger and freight services to operate more efficiently, reducing conflicts between different categories of trains. The project is part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to modernise and expand railway infrastructure across the country. Multitracking initiatives are being undertaken on several high-density routes to improve connectivity, increase transportation capacity, and support economic growth. These projects are also aimed at meeting rising demand for passenger travel and freight movement. For Bihar, the expansion of railway infrastructure is expected to provide improved connectivity and support regional development.

Better rail capacity can help industries transport goods more efficiently while providing passengers with more travel options. The project is also expected to contribute to reducing pressure on existing tracks, which have been operating under significant demand. The approval of the Danapur–Fatuha multitracking project marks a significant step towards upgrading the Patna rail corridor. Once completed, the additional lines are expected to improve the overall efficiency of train operations and provide long-term benefits for passengers, businesses, and the regional economy. Indian Railways has been prioritising such infrastructure upgrades to create a more reliable and expanded transportation network across the country.
