Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Assures No Sugar Shortage, Orders Action Against Hoarding

Punjab CM assures adequate sugar stocks and uninterrupted supplies.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday said there was no shortage of sugar in the state and directed officials to ensure adequate stocks and uninterrupted supply of the essential commodity. He asked authorities to closely monitor sugar stocks, sales and distribution while taking firm action against hoarding or attempts to create artificial scarcity.

Chairing a meeting with senior officials, Mann stressed that sugar is an essential household commodity and its availability must be maintained at all times. He directed officers to take steps to prevent panic and dispel misconceptions among consumers regarding the availability of sugar. The government, he said, would continue monitoring the situation in the larger public interest.

The Chief Minister noted that sugarcane production had declined across the country, including in Punjab, during the 2025-26 season because of unfavourable weather conditions. Despite the lower production, he maintained that Punjab currently has sufficient sugar stocks and there is no alarming situation in the state.

Mann directed officials to carry out physical verification of sugar stocks held by sugar mills and ensure strict implementation of prescribed stock-holding limits. He also asked authorities to ensure registration and weekly reporting through the Food Stock Monitoring Portal so that the government can keep track of available supplies and movement of the commodity.

The Chief Minister further instructed officials to strictly enforce stock-holding limits applicable to bulk consumers of sugar. He stressed that any attempt to hoard the commodity or manipulate supplies would face firm action, while officials were asked to maintain regular checks on the market to ensure that consumers do not face unnecessary shortages.

Mann reiterated that the Punjab government would continue to monitor the sale, stock and supply of sugar and take all necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted availability. Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Ravi Bhagat, Secretary (Cooperation) Ajit Balaji Joshi and other senior officials attended the meeting.
