Jailed Karnataka Officer Found In Hospital During Surprise Judge’s Inspection

Jailed officer’s hospital stay comes under scrutiny after surprise inspection.

A Karnataka government official arrested by the Lokayukta was found staying in a special room at a government hospital despite doctors reportedly finding no medical condition requiring continued hospitalisation. The matter came to light during a surprise inspection by Mandya District and Sessions Judge C Chandrashekar at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS).

Mohammed Hussain, Assistant Director of Land Records (ADLR) in Srirangapatna, had been arrested by Lokayukta police in connection with an alleged illegal accounts-related case and was supposed to be lodged in jail. Instead, he was admitted to MIMS in Mandya, where he was reportedly staying in a special room. The circumstances of his hospital stay prompted scrutiny during the judge's inspection.

During the visit, the judge questioned doctors about Hussain's medical condition. A doctor reportedly informed the judge that Hussain did not have an illness that required him to remain admitted to the hospital. The inspection reportedly took another turn when a young woman was found inside the special room occupied by Hussain.

When questioned by the judge about her presence, the woman reportedly identified herself as Hussain's girlfriend. The development led the judge to question jail authorities about how Hussain had been transferred from jail to the hospital and whether the required procedures had been followed.

Jail officials reportedly told the judge that Hussain had been admitted to MIMS on the recommendation of the jail doctor. However, when questioned about whether the court had been informed about the transfer, a jail official reportedly acknowledged that the court had not been notified. The official indicated that the matter would be brought to the court's notice in future.

The judge reprimanded the jail authorities and directed jail officials as well as MIMS medical authorities to submit detailed reports explaining the circumstances surrounding Hussain's hospital admission and stay. Further investigation is underway into the circumstances of his hospitalisation and the alleged lapses in following procedures.
