Modi and Amit Shah pay tribute to BJP workers killed in West Bengal political violence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday paid tribute to BJP workers who were killed in alleged political violence in West Bengal, during the swearing-in ceremony of the new state government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The event was held at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata and was marked by both political celebration and emotional remembrance.
A makeshift memorial was set up near the main stage at the venue, displaying the names of what were described as “martyrs” along with their respective districts. The display was intended to honour party workers who, according to BJP leaders, lost their lives in incidents of political violence over recent years in the state. The memorial became a focal point of the ceremony, drawing attention from leaders and attendees.
In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said the sacrifices of BJP workers would remain a lasting part of the party’s journey. He described them as individuals who laid down their lives for an “ideal greater than themselves,” adding that their courage would continue to inspire party workers. His message came alongside a photograph of the memorial erected at the venue.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his tribute, stating that the memorial had deeply moved those present at the oath-taking ceremony. He said the sacrifice and struggle of the deceased workers were being remembered with respect and described them as individuals who dedicated themselves to the organisation and the nation. Shah also shared a video of the memorial, reinforcing the emotional tone of the event.
State BJP leaders, including West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, claimed that more than 300 party workers had been killed in alleged post-poll violence, particularly following the 2021 Assembly elections. They said the workers were targeted for supporting political change in the state and argued that their sacrifices should not be forgotten during the formation of the new government.
The tribute added a strong emotional and political dimension to the swearing-in ceremony, which also symbolised a major political shift in West Bengal. While the event marked the beginning of a new administration, the memorial underscored the party’s narrative of past political conflicts and the challenges faced during its rise in the state.
