PM Modi attends swearing-in ceremony as BJP forms its first government in West Bengal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Grounds on Saturday to attend what was described in reports as the swearing-in ceremony of a new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal. The event drew large crowds of supporters and strong political attention, with senior party leaders present alongside the Prime Minister.
Upon his arrival, Modi was received by West Bengal BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya and leader Suvendu Adhikari. He was seen entering the venue in an open vehicle amid slogans of “Jai Shri Ram,” waving at supporters gathered in large numbers at the parade grounds. Security was tightened across the area due to the high-profile nature of the event.
According to reports, the Prime Minister landed earlier in the day at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and then proceeded by helicopter before travelling by road to the venue. Thousands of BJP supporters reportedly assembled since early morning to witness the ceremony, creating a dense and energetic crowd at the Brigade Parade Grounds.

The BJP’s reported political gains in the state Assembly have been widely cited in connection with the event, with claims that the party secured a majority in the 294-member House. However, official confirmations and final electoral details have not been independently verified in all reports circulating around the ceremony. The developments mark a significant moment in West Bengal’s highly competitive political landscape, long dominated by regional parties.
The event was positioned by party leaders as a historic transition, symbolising a shift in governance in the state after years of political rivalry. Supporters celebrated the occasion with chants and flags, while leaders emphasized development and administrative change as key themes of the incoming government’s agenda.
The ceremony, held at one of Kolkata’s largest public grounds, is expected to be followed by a formal oath-taking process and subsequent announcements regarding the new state cabinet and governance priorities. Authorities maintained tight security throughout the event, given the scale of the gathering and its political significance.
