Bangladesh Awami League Greets Suvendu Adhikari As He Assumes Office As West Bengal Chief Minister
Bangladesh Awami League praised Suvendu Adhikari’s leadership and expressed hope for stronger bilateral ties with Bengal.
The Bangladesh Awami League on Saturday congratulated BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari following his electoral victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections and his swearing-in as the state’s Chief Minister. In a statement issued by its Central Working Committee, the party described Adhikari’s mandate as “a unique recognition” of his leadership and expressed optimism about future cooperation between Bangladesh and West Bengal.
The Awami League said the political transition in West Bengal presents an opportunity to deepen ties rooted in shared history, language and culture. The statement noted that Bangladesh and West Bengal have maintained close people-to-people connections over decades and voiced hope that relations would continue to strengthen under the newly elected state government. The party also reiterated the importance of India-Bangladesh relations, describing the bilateral partnership as one based on longstanding friendship and cooperation.
According to the statement, the Awami League expects the momentum of mutual development between the neighbouring regions to continue during Adhikari’s tenure. The party added that enhanced collaboration in areas such as trade, connectivity, culture and regional development could further reinforce ties between Bangladesh and eastern India. It also conveyed wishes for the success, good health and effective governance of Adhikari and his cabinet, while expressing hopes for peace and prosperity for the people of West Bengal.

Adhikari took oath earlier in the day as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister, marking a major political shift in the state after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The BJP won more than 200 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the All India Trinamool Congress was reduced to around 80 seats, ending its 15-year rule in the state. The election outcome is being viewed as one of the BJP’s most significant breakthroughs in eastern India.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with senior Union Ministers including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan. Several Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, including Himanta Biswa Sarma and Pushkar Singh Dhami, were also present at the event. Adhikari was earlier elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party after the party’s Assembly election victory. He secured wins in both the Bhabanipur and Nandigram constituencies. According to Election Commission data, he defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of 15,105 votes while also retaining Nandigram, further consolidating his position as a key BJP leader in West Bengal politics.
