Omar Abdullah Visits Kalaban, Assures Relief After Land Subsidence

Omar Abdullah promises support for Poonch’s displaced residents.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made a heartfelt visit to Kalaban village in Poonch district on Wednesday to evaluate the devastation caused by ongoing land subsidence near the Line of Control (LoC). The crisis, which began on September 11, has affected over 1,000 residents, damaging 95 homes, a mosque, a graveyard, and critical infrastructure in the Mendhar tehsil.

Arriving by helicopter, Abdullah toured the affected areas, witnessing firsthand the cracked roads, collapsed houses, and disrupted lives. Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sharma and local MLA Minister Javaid Rana, he received a detailed briefing on the extent of the damage. The chief minister engaged directly with displaced residents, listening to their concerns and assuring them of comprehensive government support.

“The people of Kalaban are not alone in this crisis,” Abdullah said, pledging immediate relief measures. He directed officials to ensure adequate boarding, lodging, and essential supplies for those relocated to temporary shelters. The government is also exploring long-term rehabilitation plans to restore stability to the affected families.

Kalaban is among 11 villages across Jammu, Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, and Reasi districts hit by post-monsoon land subsidence, which has damaged over 200 homes and displaced more than 3,000 people. The recurring natural calamity has raised concerns about environmental stability in the region’s border areas, prompting calls for geological studies and preventive measures. Abdullah’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities in this challenging time.
