Mumbai Rain Fury Records Sharp Variations In 24-Hour Area-Wise City Rainfall Data

Mumbai records varied rainfall across city in 24 hours.

Mumbai experienced intense overnight monsoon rainfall between the night of June 23 and the morning of June 24, with several parts of the city recording extremely heavy showers exceeding 200 mm within an eight-hour window. The downpour led to widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and renewed flooding concerns across low-lying and flood-prone areas, as the monsoon strengthened over the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

According to data from Automatic Weather Stations, Malwani recorded the highest rainfall at 334 mm, followed by Powai with 296 mm and Charkop with 265 mm. Other significant readings included Dadar at 277 mm, Borivali at 250 mm, Parel at 219 mm, and Vikhroli at 202 mm, while Bhandup and Worli also reported heavy rainfall during the same period.

The intense rain caused significant water accumulation at several critical locations across the city, including Hindmata, Andheri Subway, Malad Subway, and parts of Sion. Commuters faced delays during peak morning hours as major roads were inundated, slowing traffic movement and prompting diversions in multiple areas. Civic agencies deployed pumping and drainage systems to clear submerged stretches and restore normal traffic flow.

The India Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department) issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai, warning of moderate to intense rainfall spells over the next 24 hours. The alert also extended to neighbouring districts including Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg, where continued heavy rainfall activity is expected due to active monsoon conditions over the region.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged zones, and adhere to weather advisories as the city continues to face intermittent heavy showers. The latest spell is among the most intense rainfall events recorded in Mumbai this monsoon season, underscoring the vulnerability of the city’s drainage infrastructure during peak monsoon conditions and raising concerns about further disruptions if rainfall intensity persists.
