Mumbai's Water Crisis Gets Relief as IMD Forecasts Proper Monsoon Rains From June 22

IMD forecasts monsoon arrival for Mumbai starting June 22 after dry spell.

After several days of hot and humid weather, Mumbai is expected to witness a significant increase in monsoon activity from June 22, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across the city. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for June 22 and June 23, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph at isolated locations.

According to the IMD, Mumbai is likely to experience hot and humid conditions with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers until June 20, before weather conditions become more favourable for widespread rainfall from June 21 onwards. Increased moisture inflow over the Konkan region is expected to strengthen rain activity, bringing relief from the prolonged dry spell and soaring humidity that residents have experienced in recent days.

Neighbouring districts, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad, are also expected to see a gradual rise in rainfall activity over the coming days. While these regions may continue to witness isolated light showers and humid weather until June 20, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall from June 21 onwards as the southwest monsoon advances further into Maharashtra.

The delayed monsoon has also intensified Mumbai's water crisis, with water levels in the city's reservoirs falling sharply. According to the latest Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation data released on June 20, the combined live storage in Mumbai's lakes has dropped below 10%, leaving only 9% useful water available. The shortage has pushed up tanker prices, with non-potable water now costing Rs 1,800-2,000 per 10,000 litres and potable water priced between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,500.

The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall across Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada between June 20 and June 25, while Konkan is expected to receive enhanced rainfall over the same period. Some parts of Madhya Maharashtra may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, with speeds potentially reaching 60 kmph between June 22 and June 25.

The latest weather bulletin also indicates favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon to advance into more parts of Maharashtra, central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and parts of Chhattisgarh over the next four to five days. Alongside the expected increase in rainfall, daytime temperatures across Maharashtra are forecast to decline by 2-3 degrees Celsius after June 20, offering much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humid conditions.
