Southwest Monsoon Intensifies Across India, Orange Alert Issued For Mumbai
Southwest monsoon intensifies; orange alert issued for Mumbai today.
The southwest monsoon continued its gradual advance across several parts of India on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting increased rainfall activity over Maharashtra, Goa, northeastern states and parts of central and eastern India in the coming days. The weather system has already progressed over sections of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh, bringing widespread showers and improving conditions for further monsoon advancement.
Mumbai remained on alert as civic authorities warned of adverse weather conditions associated with the approaching monsoon. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued an orange alert for the city, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to intense rainfall and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour at isolated locations. The alert covers the immediate hours ahead as weather activity intensifies over the region.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, stay away from vulnerable structures and follow updates issued by local authorities. Emergency response teams and civic agencies are monitoring conditions closely to address any disruptions caused by strong winds, waterlogging or falling trees.

According to meteorological officials, the formal onset of the southwest monsoon over Mumbai is expected either later on Monday or by Tuesday. However, weather experts noted that the declaration will only be made once all meteorological criteria required for monsoon onset are fully satisfied. Pre-monsoon showers have already affected several parts of the city, indicating favourable atmospheric conditions for its arrival.
Elsewhere, rainfall is expected to strengthen across Goa and northeastern India as monsoon currents become more active. States in eastern and central India are also likely to witness continued showers over the next few days. The enhanced rainfall activity is expected to benefit agriculture, improve reservoir levels and provide relief from high temperatures experienced in recent weeks.
The steady advancement of the monsoon marks a crucial stage in India's annual weather cycle. While the rains are expected to support farming activities and water availability, meteorologists have cautioned that intense downpours may lead to localised flooding, traffic disruptions and infrastructure challenges in some areas. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and monitor official weather bulletins as conditions continue to evolve.
