Mumbai Identifies Over 800 Buildings As Extremely Dangerous Amid Safety Concerns
Mumbai flags 800+ buildings as extremely dangerous structures.
The housing safety situation across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region has reached a critical stage, with civic authorities identifying over 800 buildings as “extremely dangerous” and more than 18,000 additional structures classified as unsafe, according to reports citing municipal assessments.
The affected buildings are spread across Mumbai and adjoining urban centres including Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi, Mira-Bhayandar, and Ulhasnagar. Many of these structures are estimated to be between 30 to 50 years old and have either failed structural stability audits or never undergone proper safety inspections, raising concerns over long-term habitation risks.
Despite repeated warnings and evacuation notices issued by municipal bodies, a large number of residents continue to stay in these buildings. Officials say the primary reason is the absence of immediate transit housing or affordable relocation options, forcing families to remain in potentially hazardous conditions.
Civic authorities have flagged the risk of catastrophic building failures during the upcoming monsoon season. Persistent rainfall, water seepage, and weakened structural components such as corroded pillars and deteriorating walls are being cited as major contributing factors that could trigger sudden collapses.
In response, evacuation drives have been initiated in select areas. Authorities are also reportedly considering stricter enforcement measures, including the disconnection of water and electricity supply in buildings where residents refuse to vacate despite safety warnings. However, the crisis is being compounded by deeper systemic issues, including stalled redevelopment projects, legal disputes between residents and developers, and delays in approvals from various agencies.

These procedural bottlenecks have slowed down reconstruction efforts, leaving thousands of families exposed to ongoing risk.Officials have warned that unless a coordinated evacuation strategy is implemented and redevelopment processes are expedited, the region could face increasing threats to both human life and property, particularly during extreme weather conditions.
