Kota Hospital Under Scrutiny After Four Maternal Deaths Post Delivery

Four mothers died after post-delivery complications in Kota.

A serious maternal health crisis has emerged in Kota, Rajasthan, where four women have died within a week following post-delivery complications after undergoing C-section surgeries at government hospitals. The cases involve patients treated at the New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) and JK Lone Hospital, raising concerns over post-operative care and infection management.

The latest victim, 31-year-old Pinky Mahawar from Shriramnagar, died shortly after midnight on Sunday at the Super Specialty Block of NMCH. Her death came days after she underwent a Caesarean section at JK Lone Hospital, after which her condition reportedly worsened rapidly.

According to her family, Pinky’s health began deteriorating soon after the surgery. Her husband, Chandra Prakash, a daily wage worker, alleged that she developed a sharp drop in blood pressure, stopped passing urine, and showed signs consistent with kidney failure. He further claimed that despite visible complications, she was not referred to a higher medical facility in time.

Pinky was admitted on May 7 and underwent a C-section that same night. By the following day, doctors reportedly informed the family that her uterus had become infected, requiring a second surgical intervention within 15 hours. Her condition continued to worsen, and she was later shifted by ambulance to NMCH’s Super Specialty Block, where she eventually died during treatment.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of complications reported over the past week. At least six women developed severe post-operative issues, including sudden drops in platelet count, blood pressure instability, and urinary blockage following C-section deliveries at NMCH. Two of these patients also died during treatment, while others remain under critical observation. The deceased include Jyoti Nayak and Payal, while a 22-year-old patient, Priya Mahawar, is among those affected.

In response to rising concerns, NMCH authorities stated that six postpartum women are currently under intensive monitoring in the Super Specialty Block. Hospital principal Dr. Nilesh Jain said Pinky Mahawar was considered a high-risk patient from the early stages of pregnancy and noted differences in cases referred from JK Lone Hospital versus those admitted directly to NMCH.

Amid public outrage, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incidents. Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar is overseeing the investigation, which aims to determine whether medical negligence or contaminated supplies contributed to the cluster of kidney-related complications and maternal deaths.
