Mumbai Battled Heavy Rains, Commuters Face Disruptions On Week’s First Day

Overnight downpour caused traffic delays, train disruptions, and waterlogging in several Mumbai areas.

Mumbai faced significant disruptions on September 15, 2025, as heavy overnight rainfall led to waterlogging and slowed the city’s morning commute. The downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning, began around midnight and continued into Monday morning, inundating low-lying areas such as King’s Circle, Kurla, and Bandra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported Colaba as the hardest hit, recording 88.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 AM Sunday and 5:30 AM Monday, followed by Bandra with 82 mm and Byculla with 73 mm.

The heavy rains caused chaos for commuters, with waterlogged roads and potholes exacerbating traffic congestion during peak office hours. Local train services, a lifeline for millions in Mumbai, faced delays at the Central Railway’s Kurla station and the Western Railway’s Bandra network due to water accumulation on tracks, according to railway officials. Civic authorities noted that the waterlogging stemmed from the city’s overburdened drainage systems, a recurring issue during the monsoon season.

Other areas reported significant rainfall, with the Mahul Tata Power station recording 70.5 mm, Juhu 45.0 mm, Santacruz 36.6 mm, and Mahalaxmi 36.5 mm. The IMD has forecasted continued showers through the week, urging residents to stay cautious. Civic officials are working to clear drainage systems, but commuters are advised to plan for delays and avoid waterlogged routes.

The disruptions highlight Mumbai’s ongoing struggle with monsoon-related infrastructure challenges. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed pumps in severely affected areas and is monitoring the situation closely. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on analytics.
