Kerala Ready for AIIMS Anywhere: No District Preference, Says Health Minister
Kerala's new Congress-led government drops location demands, willing to accept AIIMS anywhere in the state.
Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan on Monday said the state government is prepared to allow the Centre to establish the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) anywhere in the state, without insisting on a specific district. Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, the minister said the newly formed Congress-led government is keen to accelerate the long-pending proposal and is ready to extend full cooperation to the Union Government for the project’s implementation.
Muraleedharan said land is available in several districts across Kerala and stressed that the priority is securing the prestigious medical institution for the state rather than debating its exact location. He added that even districts such as Palakkad would be acceptable if the Centre considers them suitable for the institute. The minister’s remarks come amid renewed political discussions over the proposed AIIMS location and the state’s continued demand for a premier central medical institution.
In an apparent criticism of Thrissur MP and Union Minister Suresh Gopi, Muraleedharan stated that no official recommendation had been submitted seeking the establishment of AIIMS in Thrissur. At the same time, he indicated that Alappuzha could emerge as a strong contender for the project due to its healthcare infrastructure and other logistical advantages. He said the state government would soon hold discussions with the Centre to ensure the process moves forward without further delay.

Kerala has been demanding an AIIMS for several years, with successive governments urging the Centre to approve the project in view of the state’s strong healthcare indicators and growing demand for advanced medical facilities. Muraleedharan also referred to the proposed Rs 500-crore ESI hospital project, alleging that it had faced delays during the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government because of procedural hurdles. The latest statement from the state government signals a renewed push to secure major healthcare infrastructure projects and improve access to specialised medical services across Kerala.
