Manipur Police Inducts 477 Vehicles To Enhance Mobility And Response

Manipur Police receives 477 vehicles to improve emergency response and modernisation.

In a major push to strengthen policing and improve emergency response capabilities, Manipur Police on Monday inducted 477 new vehicles into its fleet, including 60 bulletproof vehicles, in a flag-off ceremony held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground. The initiative is aimed at enhancing mobility and operational readiness across the violence-affected state.

The fleet includes a wide range of vehicles such as 100 Hero motorcycles, 39 Bolero B6 units, 50 Bolero Neo SUVs, 74 Tata Yodha utility vehicles, 10 mine-protected vehicles, 20 Tata trucks, 30 Tata 407 vehicles, 20 Mahindra buses, 19 water tankers, 50 Bolero Camper vehicles, and 60 bulletproof Rakshak vehicles. Officials said the diverse additions are intended to support both rapid response operations and logistical movement in difficult terrain.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh flagged off the vehicles and said the move would significantly improve police infrastructure, particularly in the hill districts, where connectivity and rapid deployment have remained a challenge. He emphasised that strengthening the police force is essential for maintaining peace and security, especially in a state that has faced prolonged unrest in recent years.

Referring to the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, between Kuki and Meitei communities, the Chief Minister said the Manipur Police had been working under extremely difficult conditions while attempting to prevent escalation and maintain law and order. He also acknowledged the support of central armed forces, including the Army, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, Assam Rifles, and others in stabilising the situation.

The state government has reportedly received Rs 196.61 crore from the Ministry of Home Affairs for police modernisation, which is being used to upgrade infrastructure and operational capabilities. Officials said the latest induction of vehicles is part of a broader modernisation plan to improve efficiency, response time, and accessibility across both hill and valley regions.

Director General of Police Rajiv Singh said the new vehicles would significantly enhance mobility and operational effectiveness. He added that 54 per cent of the fleet will be deployed in hill districts, while 46 per cent will be used in valley areas. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Anti-Extortion Cell and anti-drug operations, under which over 1,700 arrests have been made, along with specialised training partnerships with national agencies to further strengthen policing capabilities.
