Kempegowda Airport first in India to earn ACI Level-2
India’s first Level-2 Accessibility Accreditation at BLR Airport.
Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has achieved a groundbreaking feat, becoming the first airport in India to secure Level-2 Accreditation under the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation (AEA) program, officials announced on Thursday. This prestigious recognition positions BLR Airport among an elite group of global airports celebrated for prioritizing accessibility in their operations, policies, and passenger experiences.
Managed by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), BLR Airport was evaluated under the AEA program, the world’s only initiative dedicated to advancing accessibility in aviation. The accreditation assesses facilities, services, and governance, focusing on continuous improvements for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). “This Level-2 Accreditation reflects our commitment to inclusive, seamless, and empathetic travel,” said Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer of BIAL. “Accessibility is at the core of our mission to enhance the passenger experience.”
BLR Airport has introduced pioneering initiatives, including the Sunflower Lanyard scheme to assist travelers with hidden disabilities and India’s first sensory room tailored for neurodivergent passengers. A dedicated accessibility committee, coupled with regular staff training, ensures compassionate assistance and ongoing infrastructure enhancements. These measures have set a new benchmark for inclusivity in Indian aviation.

The accreditation underscores BLR Airport’s leadership in fostering an equitable travel environment, with upgraded facilities like accessible restrooms, tactile pathways, and braille signage. The airport’s efforts have been lauded by disability rights advocates, who see this as a step toward transforming air travel for all. As Bengaluru continues to innovate, it paves the way for other Indian airports to prioritize accessibility, ensuring every passenger’s journey is dignified and hassle-free.
