IMD Yellow Alert: Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds And Hailstorms Headed For Delhi-NCR

IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi-NCR as western disturbance brings rain today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR as a western disturbance is set to bring a fresh spell of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across northwest India on Friday. The weather system is expected to influence conditions across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and surrounding regions, bringing temporary relief from rising temperatures.

According to the IMD forecast, Delhi is likely to experience generally cloudy skies throughout the day, with two spells of very light to light rain expected—one in the morning and another during the afternoon or evening. These weather conditions are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds ranging between 40–50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph.

The weather department has warned of isolated disruptions due to strong winds and sudden thunderstorm activity. Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially during outdoor movement, as gusty winds may lead to falling branches, temporary power disruptions, and reduced visibility during rain spells.

Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures in the capital are expected to remain slightly below seasonal averages. The maximum temperature is forecast to stay around 34–36°C on June 12 and 35–37°C on June 13, indicating relatively milder conditions compared to the usual peak summer heat experienced during this period.

Meteorologists attribute the change in weather to an active western disturbance affecting northwest India, which typically brings moisture-laden winds and unstable atmospheric conditions. Such systems are known to trigger thunderstorms, especially during the transition phase between peak summer and the onset of monsoon activity.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the system progresses. While the rain is expected to be scattered and short-lived, the IMD has urged residents across Delhi-NCR to stay updated with local weather advisories as conditions may change rapidly during the day.
