Bengaluru Waterlogging Worsens as Pre-Monsoon Rains Intensify; IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Pre-monsoon thunderstorms batter Bengaluru for a third day, triggering waterlogging, flight delays, and an IMD yellow alert across Karnataka.
Heavy pre-monsoon showers continued to lash Bengaluru on Tuesday, triggering widespread waterlogging across several parts of the city and disrupting normal life for commuters. Residents woke up to flooded roads, traffic congestion, and slow-moving vehicles as thunderstorms persisted for the third consecutive day. Videos and images showing inundated streets and overflowing drains quickly surfaced on social media platforms, highlighting the impact of the intense rainfall on India’s technology capital.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and several parts of Karnataka for the next three days, warning of continued rainfall and gusty winds. According to the Regional Meteorological Center in Bengaluru, the city is expected to witness a partly cloudy sky accompanied by light to moderate rain and thundershowers through the day. Officials have also warned that wind speeds could reach 40 to 50 km/h across South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts.
The weather department stated that sudden evening showers, lightning activity, and temporary strong winds are likely to continue over the coming days as part of a broader pre-monsoon system affecting Southern India. IMD has also issued orange alerts for some regions in South Karnataka during the past 24 hours. Temperatures in Bengaluru are expected to remain between 22 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels may fluctuate between 45 percent and 70 percent throughout the day.

The persistent rainfall has also affected transportation services, with authorities cautioning commuters and air travelers to monitor updates before stepping out. Traffic movement slowed significantly in several low-lying areas due to water accumulation and drainage overflow. Flight operations faced temporary disruptions during periods of intense thunderstorms, prompting airlines to issue travel advisories. Budget carrier IndiGo said adverse weather conditions over Bengaluru had impacted flight schedules and urged passengers to stay updated through its official website and mobile application.
Officials said the ongoing rainfall activity is linked to seasonal atmospheric changes sweeping across southern states ahead of the southwest monsoon. Apart from Karnataka, neighboring Kerala has also been placed under heavy rain alerts, especially in hilly districts vulnerable to landslides and flooding. Meteorologists noted that pre-monsoon thunderstorms are common during this period, though the intensity and frequency of recent downpours have raised concerns about urban infrastructure and stormwater management in Bengaluru.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during active thunderstorm spells and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electrical installations due to the risk of lightning strikes. Emergency response teams and civic agencies remain on alert to address waterlogging complaints and ensure smoother traffic management in vulnerable areas. While the showers have provided temporary relief from rising summer temperatures, repeated flooding and disrupted mobility continue to pose challenges for daily commuters and businesses across the city.
