Himachal Gets Rain and Hail on Final Panchayati Raj Poll Phase Across 1,189 Panchayats
An IMD yellow alert was issued across Himachal as hailstorms hit during the final panchayat poll phase.
A spell of rain, hailstorms, and snowfall brought much-needed relief from heatwave-like conditions across Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, even as nearly 17 lakh voters headed to polling stations for the third and final phase of the Panchayati Raj elections. In response to the changing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across most parts of the state. The alert covers all districts except Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.
The weather change coincided with polling in 1,189 panchayats across Himachal Pradesh, where voters are electing Pradhans, Up-Pradhans, ward members, and representatives to Zila Parishads and Panchayat Samitis. Despite concerns over adverse weather, election authorities continued polling arrangements, with voters turning out across districts to participate in the local body elections. The final phase marks the conclusion of the state's Panchayati Raj electoral process.
Several higher-altitude areas experienced fresh snowfall as the weather system moved across the region. Rohtang Pass, Shinkula, and Baralacha received light snowfall, while Shimla and nearby areas witnessed strong winds and intense hailstorms. Localities including Mashobra, Kufri, Khara Patthar, and several surrounding panchayats reported heavy hail accompanied by rain. The precipitation brought a significant drop in temperatures and provided relief from the unusually warm conditions that had persisted in recent days.

Meteorological officials have advised residents to remain cautious as thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected to continue in several districts. The yellow alert indicates the possibility of weather-related disruptions, particularly in vulnerable and mountainous areas. While the rainfall has improved weather conditions and reduced temperatures, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety and the smooth conduct of the election process across the state.
