Heavy Rains And Storms Bring Relief To Heat-Battered Delhi-NCR
Thunderstorms bring heatwave relief but disrupt Delhi flight operations.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday evening, bringing much-needed relief from an intense heatwave that had gripped the region for several days. The sudden change in weather led to strong winds, waterlogging in parts of the city, and widespread disruption in normal activity.
Visuals shared on social media showed intense thunderstorm activity over Gurugram and several parts of Delhi, with dark cloud cover and heavy rainfall in multiple areas. The Indira Gandhi International Airport region also witnessed significant rainfall, adding to the disruption. The weather shift marked a sharp break from the soaring temperatures recorded earlier in the week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert earlier in the day, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rain and strong winds. According to the forecast, wind speeds were expected to reach 50–60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph in some areas. Officials had also indicated that the system would intensify later in the evening.

Weather experts noted that thunderstorm activity had already begun over parts of northern Rajasthan before moving towards Delhi by evening. Skymet Weather meteorologist Mahesh Palawat said the current system was likely to continue through the night and intensify further on the following day, with the possibility of extended pre-monsoon rainfall activity until May 30. He also suggested that the system could later shift towards Gujarat.
The sudden spell of bad weather also affected flight operations at the Delhi airport, causing delays and disruptions in arrivals and departures. Airlines including IndiGo and SpiceJet issued advisories urging passengers to check flight status before travelling, while the Delhi Airport authority recommended that travellers consider alternative transport such as the Delhi Metro to avoid delays. Authorities said operations were being closely monitored as conditions evolved.
Officials added that the ongoing pre-monsoon showers appeared stronger than earlier spells recorded in April and earlier this month, potentially bringing widespread rainfall across the region. While the rain offered relief from extreme heat, authorities cautioned that intermittent storms and strong winds could continue to impact daily life over the coming days.
