Heatwave Conditions To Persist In Delhi-NCR, IMD Issues Yellow Alert

IMD issues yellow alert as Delhi-NCR faces severe heatwave conditions with temperatures nearing 44°C for three days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions across Delhi-NCR, warning of intense and prolonged high temperatures over the next three days. The alert comes as the region continues to reel under extreme summer heat, with rising daytime temperatures and limited night-time relief expected to persist until May 22.

Delhi recorded its hottest day of the season on Monday, with temperatures approaching 44 degrees Celsius in several parts of the city. The Safdarjung observatory, the capital’s primary weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius, marking the highest reading so far this month and signalling the intensification of heatwave conditions across the region.

According to the IMD forecast, temperatures are expected to remain around 44 degrees Celsius on May 19 and May 20, with minimum temperatures hovering between 27 and 28 degrees Celsius. Hot surface winds during the afternoon and evening hours are likely to worsen discomfort levels, with authorities warning that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may pose health risks, particularly during peak daytime hours.

On May 21 and May 22, the weather is expected to remain largely unchanged, with maximum temperatures staying close to 43 degrees Celsius. Although a marginal dip in daytime heat is possible, the IMD has stated that heatwave conditions will continue during the afternoon and evening periods. Humidity levels ranging between 35 and 50 per cent are also expected to add to the sense of discomfort.

The weather department has advised residents to take precautions, including avoiding outdoor activity during peak heat hours, staying hydrated, and wearing light protective clothing. Children, senior citizens and individuals with pre-existing health conditions have been urged to take special care, as the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses remains high. While the current heatwave conditions are expected to persist through May 22, the IMD has indicated that a slight improvement in weather may begin from May 23, with clearer skies and gradually easing temperatures likely to bring some relief to residents of Delhi-NCR.
