Yellow Alert Issued In Delhi As Heatwave Likely With Temperatures Up To 44 Degrees
Delhi under yellow alert as heatwave conditions expected, with temperatures rising up to 44 degrees Celsius.
The national capital is set to experience a spell of intense heatwave conditions over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert as temperatures are expected to climb as high as 44 degrees Celsius between Wednesday and Friday.
According to weather officials, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius at the Safdarjung observatory on Tuesday, which is slightly above the seasonal average. While gusty winds offered brief relief during parts of the day, the overall weather remained hot and dry, signalling the onset of harsher summer conditions.
The IMD has warned that temperatures are likely to rise further, with the minimum temperature also expected to increase steadily from around 20.5 degrees Celsius to approximately 26 degrees Celsius by April 25. The alert indicates the possibility of heatwave conditions developing across several parts of the city if the temperature crosses critical thresholds.

Different monitoring stations across Delhi have already reported elevated readings. The Ridge area emerged as the hottest location, recording 40.2 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road and Ayanagar also registered above-normal temperatures. Officials noted that although some stations showed marginal variations, the overall trend points towards sustained heat buildup across the region.
Interestingly, despite the rising mercury, Delhi has not yet officially recorded a heatwave this season. However, weather experts say the current pattern suggests that the first major heatwave spell of the year may be imminent if conditions persist over the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to take precautions against heat exposure, especially during peak afternoon hours. With schools, offices, and daily activities continuing as usual, health officials are also expected to issue further advisories if temperatures approach or exceed heatwave criteria in the capital.
