Income Tax Department Names MS Dhoni Highest Taxpayer In Jharkhand-Bihar Region

MS Dhoni declared highest taxpayer in Jharkhand-Bihar region FY2025–26.

Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has emerged as the highest individual taxpayer in the combined Jharkhand and Bihar region for the financial year 2025–26, according to the Income Tax Department. The announcement was made during a press briefing held in Ranchi by senior tax officials. However, authorities did not disclose the exact amount of tax paid by the former cricketer, citing confidentiality norms.

The information was shared by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax D. Sudhakar Rao, who highlighted overall tax contributions from the two states. He stated that against a revenue target of ₹20,000 crore, Jharkhand contributed approximately ₹12,000 crore, while Bihar accounted for around ₹8,000 crore. Officials said the figures reflect the growing tax compliance base and expanding formal economy in the region.

During the briefing, Rao also noted that the Income Tax Department conducted enforcement actions against multiple business groups in the previous financial year. He said 12 business groups were subjected to raids in connection with alleged tax evasion cases, covering more than 150 traders and business entities. The department also registered over 90 cases related to suspected tax irregularities and non-compliance across both states.

Officials, however, refrained from disclosing the names of individuals or organisations involved in these investigations, maintaining that such details are part of ongoing or sensitive proceedings. The department emphasised that enforcement actions are aimed at improving compliance and ensuring transparency within the taxation system rather than targeting specific sectors or individuals.

The briefing also highlighted broader tax administration data, noting that nearly 40 lakh individuals across Jharkhand and Bihar currently file income tax returns. Officials further stated that the combined number of Permanent Account Number (PAN) holders in the two states is close to five crore, indicating a large base of potential taxpayers still outside the formal filing system.

Separately, officials said the visit to Ranchi also focused on awareness of the new Income Tax Act 2025, which has come into effect from April 2026. Meetings were held with chartered accountants, business groups, and industry representatives to explain key provisions and amendments in the law. The announcement regarding MS Dhoni being the highest taxpayer in the region has drawn attention due to his continued prominence as both a sports icon and public figure in eastern India.
