IMD Explains Reasons Behind Slow Monsoon Progress In Maharashtra, Mumbai Awaits Rain

IMD cites weak winds behind Maharashtra monsoon slowdown

Mumbai, Palghar and Thane are expected to experience hot and humid weather on Friday, with only limited rainfall activity, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While Mumbai and Palghar are likely to witness isolated hot and humid conditions, Thane may receive light rain or thundershowers later in the afternoon or evening.

The IMD's latest forecast indicates that monsoon activity remains subdued across parts of Maharashtra, resulting in above-normal temperatures and uncomfortable humidity levels. Residents in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are likely to experience warm conditions throughout the day, with only brief spells of rain expected in some areas.

Private weather forecaster AccuWeather has also predicted hot weather in Mumbai, with periods of sunshine, scattered clouds and breezy conditions during the afternoon. A passing shower is possible later in the day. The city's maximum temperature is expected to reach around 36 degrees Celsius, while the night is forecast to remain partly cloudy and unusually warm with isolated showers. The delayed advance of the southwest monsoon has emerged as a key concern across Maharashtra and several other parts of the country.

According to meteorologists, the monsoon has remained stalled over southern Maharashtra, slowing its progression into other regions and reducing rainfall activity during a period that typically sees more widespread precipitation. The impact of the slowdown is being reflected in national rainfall figures. According to the latest IMD data, India recorded a rainfall deficit of 41 per cent between June 4 and June 18.

During this period, the country received only 42.6 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 72.2 mm, highlighting the significant shortfall. Weather experts continue to monitor atmospheric conditions that could influence the monsoon's further movement. Any revival in monsoon activity over the coming days is expected to improve rainfall distribution across Maharashtra and help reduce the current rainfall deficit affecting several regions of the country.
