IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert for Mumbai, Pune and Thane From June 1 to June 4
IMD forecasts thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Maharashtra districts until June 4.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for several districts across Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms, rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds between June 1 and June 4. The forecast indicates widespread pre-monsoon activity across the state, with weather conditions marked as “very likely” to occur. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as changing weather patterns may affect daily activities and transportation.
Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall over the next few days. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated locations. After witnessing hot and humid conditions over the weekend, residents may receive relief from the heat as afternoon and evening thundershowers become more frequent.
The coastal districts of Palghar and Raigad are forecast to receive comparatively stronger weather activity. IMD has warned of moderate rainfall along with winds reaching 40-50 km/h, particularly on June 2. Meteorologists expect these areas to experience more intense thunderstorm conditions than Mumbai and Thane, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.

The Pune district is also likely to witness light to moderate rain and thundershowers through the first week of June. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph are expected at isolated places from June 1 to June 3. Similar weather conditions are forecast across the ghat regions of Pune, where moderate rainfall may continue over the coming days.
Several districts in the Vidarbha region, including Nagpur, Akola, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli, remain under severe weather warnings. IMD has predicted thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and winds reaching 50-60 km/h in isolated areas. The department has advised residents to avoid open spaces during storms, stay away from water bodies and tall structures during lightning activity, and keep livestock sheltered to minimize risks from severe weather conditions.
