Mumbai Weather Forecast: Rain and Thunderstorms Likely From June 1 as Pre-Monsoon Activity Builds
Mumbai will shift from humid heat to pre-monsoon rains starting June 1.
Mumbai is expected to witness a gradual shift from hot and humid weather conditions to increased pre-monsoon rainfall activity over the coming days, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather department has predicted a rise in rain and thunderstorm activity across the city, offering relief to residents who have been experiencing high temperatures and uncomfortable humidity levels in recent weeks.
For Sunday, May 31, the IMD has forecast hot and humid conditions in isolated areas of the city, with temperatures expected to range between 29°C and 35°C. While the day is likely to remain largely warm, the department has indicated the possibility of light rain or thundershowers during the afternoon and evening hours. Parts of Mumbai already received rainfall early Sunday morning, bringing temporary respite from the prevailing heat.
Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to become more widespread from June 1. The city is likely to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thundershowers as atmospheric conditions become increasingly favorable for precipitation. The expected change marks the beginning of a more active pre-monsoon phase, which typically precedes the arrival of the southwest monsoon along the western coast.

Weather conditions are forecast to intensify further on June 2, when thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall, and gusty winds are expected at isolated locations. Wind speeds could reach 30 to 40 kilometers per hour during thunderstorm activity, potentially causing temporary disruptions in some areas. The IMD has also predicted continued light rain and thundershowers across parts of Mumbai on June 3.
According to the weather department, the evolving conditions indicate a transition from the current hot and humid pattern to rain-bearing weather systems. Forecast models suggest a high probability of rainfall activity across the city during the next several days. The IMD has expressed confidence in the outlook and has assigned a "very likely" probability to the forecast through June 3.
Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during periods of thunderstorm activity. People have been urged to avoid taking shelter under trees, maintain distance from electric poles, and disconnect electronic appliances during lightning events. The IMD has also warned of possible short-term power disruptions and localized impacts from strong winds as Mumbai experiences increasingly active pre-monsoon weather in the days ahead.
