IMD Alert: Thunderstorms, Hail, And Gusty Winds to Lash Mumbai, Pune This Week
IMD warns of thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds across Maharashtra on March 18 and 19.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert for several districts in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar, warning of rainfall and thundershowers over the next two days. According to its March 18 bulletin, thunderstorm activity is expected to remain active across parts of the state until March 19.
In Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, light rain and thundershowers are likely on March 18 and 19. The IMD noted that Thane could experience slightly higher intensity on March 19, with light to moderate rainfall, while Mumbai and Palghar are expected to continue receiving light showers. Weather conditions are likely to turn dry in these districts from March 20 onwards.
Pune is expected to witness comparatively stronger weather activity. On March 18, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 50–60 kmph and possible hail are forecast at isolated places. On March 19, thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall are likely, along with winds of 40–50 kmph, before conditions ease from March 20.

The IMD said that across these four districts, rainfall and thunderstorm activity remains “very likely” on March 18 and 19, with no significant rainfall expected between March 20 and March 22. The weather system is expected to weaken gradually after this period.
Other parts of Maharashtra are also likely to be affected. Coastal districts may experience thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds, with some areas seeing winds up to 50–60 kmph and hail. North and central Maharashtra regions could witness similar conditions, particularly on March 19, while Marathwada and Vidarbha may also see thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated hail before activity reduces after March 20.
The weather department has advised residents to avoid open areas during thunderstorms, stay away from tall structures and water bodies, and unplug electrical appliances during lightning. Farmers have been urged to harvest mature crops early, avoid irrigation and spraying, and ensure that harvested produce and livestock are kept in safe locations.
