2.6 Lakh Indians Return From Middle East as West Asia Conflict Intensifies
India confirms 2.6 lakh nationals have returned from the conflict-hit Middle East since February 28.
The Indian government on Wednesday said that around 2.6 lakh people have returned to the country from West Asia since February 28, amid the ongoing regional conflict. The update was shared during an inter-ministerial briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighting efforts to ensure the safe return of Indian nationals from affected areas. Officials noted that the situation remains dynamic, with continuous monitoring and coordination underway.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the evolving situation in the region. During the call, Modi strongly condemned attacks on the UAE that resulted in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, while both leaders emphasised the importance of ensuring safe and uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The government stated that this was the second conversation between the two leaders since the conflict escalated on February 28, when coordinated strikes were launched on Iran. Both sides reiterated their commitment to restoring peace, stability, and security in the region. The situation has raised concerns globally due to its potential impact on trade routes, energy supplies, and the safety of expatriate populations.

Providing operational details, Additional Secretary (Gulf) Aseem R Mahajan said that flight connectivity between the Gulf and India remains largely stable despite disruptions. Around 70 flights were expected to operate from various airports in the UAE to India on Wednesday, offering reassurance to travellers. He added that flight operations have been improving gradually, with airlines adjusting schedules based on evolving airspace conditions.
The MEA also confirmed that Indian missions in the region are actively assisting nationals, including students and seafarers, with consular services and logistical support. In Tehran, the Indian Embassy has facilitated the relocation of several students, while advisories have been issued for safe transit across borders into neighbouring countries such as Armenia and Azerbaijan. Authorities have urged citizens to follow official guidance to ensure their safety.
Officials further noted that disruptions have impacted academic schedules, with several board examinations, including CBSE, ICSE, and Kerala state exams, being cancelled in affected regions. Meanwhile, airspace restrictions continue in some countries such as Kuwait, though alternative arrangements, including special flights, are being planned. The government reiterated that it remains closely engaged with all stakeholders and is committed to supporting Indian nationals while ensuring their safe return amid the evolving crisis.
